Prof. Dr. Kazim Şahin, Dean of the Faculty and TÜBA Full Member and Executive Director of the Food and Nutrition Working Group, delivered a speech at the 6th Food and Healthy Nutrition Symposium organised by the TÜBA Food and Nutrition Working Group: ‘According to World Health Organisation data, there are more than 1.9 billion overweight or obesity patients and it is estimated that this number will exceed 4 billion in 2035’. Stating that an increase in the prevalence of obesity is observed in the 30s and the highest levels are reached at the ages of 45-65, Şahin said that Turkey ranks first in Europe with an obesity rate of 32 per cent in adults over the age of 18.
Şahin said, ‘Research in Turkey reveals that one out of every four children is overweight or obese. This situation can cause long-term negative effects on children's health and can lay the foundation for various chronic diseases in later ages. Therefore, it is of great importance to implement effective policies and programmes at national and international level to prevent and control obesity.’
